  1. To add insult to injury → To worsen an unfavorable situation. 

“To add insult to injury the car drove off without stopping after knocking me off my bike.”

 

  1. To cost an arm and a leg → to be very expensive.

“These opera tickets cost us an arm and a leg!”

 

  1. To beat around the bush → to avoid answering a question or to not speak directly about an issue.

“Stop beating around the bush and answer my question.” 

 

  1. Don't count your chickens before they hatch → to make plans based on events that  may not happen.

 You might not win the prize and you've already spent the money? Don't count your chickens before they hatch!”  

 

  1. It takes two to tango →  it requires two people to do certain things. 

“There’s no such thing as a one-sided argument. It takes two to tango.”

 

  1. By the skin of your teeth →  to only just succeed; to nearly fail.

  1. To speak of the devil →  this means that the person you’re just talking about actually turns up at that moment.

“Hi Bill, speak of the devil! I was just telling Sara about your new car.”

 

  1. To feel under the weather →  to not feel well. 

“I’m really feeling under the weather today; I have a terrible cold.”

 

  1. To jump the gun →  to do or start something too early. 

“You are taking your TOEIC test next week? Aren’t you jumping the gun? You’ve only just started studying.”
